Research Assistant - New England Aquarium. 1989-1999. Projects included:
New England Aquarium/Environmental Protection Agency Boston Harbor Eelgrass Program. Monitored health of eelgrass beds, conducted experimental transplant from Nahant to Hingham.
New England Aquarium orphaned baby harbor seals rescue program. Cared for orphaned baby harbor seals pending reintroduction to Boston Harbor.
Massachusetts Freshwater Biodiversity Program. Monitored plant and fish populations, water quality, and human land-use parameters at numerous sites in the Parker River drainage area to assess factors affecting populations of endangered bridle shiner.
Lake Victoria Research Team. Worked closely with Kenyan and Ugandan fisheries officials and local fishermen throughout the Lake Victoria region. Collected and preserved fish for Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology's fish collection. Collected live fish for laboratory experiments at the New England Aquarium, and as broodstock for AZA Captive Breeding Program. Collected water quality data.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Undersea Research Center Aquarius Underwater Habitat. Surface-support scientist for Mission 89-6, St. Croix, USVI. Built, deployed and monitored large array of zooplankton sampling devices.
AZA breeding program for Lake Victoria cichlids. Collected broodstock from various locales in the Lake Victoria basin in Kenya and Uganda, shipped them back to the New England Aquarium and eventually on to other participating institutions. Managed first version of studbook.
Conducted research on ecology of coral reef fishes, Heron Island Research Station, Australia. Looked at variation of schooling behavior of Chromis nitida, a planktivorous damselfish, in response to various environmental factors. Published as: Sackley, P.G. and L.S. Kaufman. 1996.
