Rock 'n' Roll 101: Intro to Dad's Music Collection

Mount Rushmore, Part 3

Okay, parts 1 and 2 had the desired effect. My kids were jumping around like crazy. I'm guessing that the reaction to Part 3 might not be the same. That's okay. You need to listen to Fats Domino. It's like learning Greek or Latin. Or how to count. Or how to breathe. Some people say "The Fat Man" was the first rock 'n' roll song. Thank God I got a chance to see him at Jazz Fest back in the day, because it doesn't look like he's ever going to play out live again.

Bonus Tracks:

  1. Harry Connick Jr. - I'm Walkin'. I don't know why, but I love this version. For a long time, I never even realized he was from New Orleans.
  2. Bonerama - I'm Walkin'. One of the best bands in New Orleans right now is Bonerama. They always have at least 3 trombones going at any one time, and they met when they were backing up, yup, Harry Connick Jr. They play a great version of I'm Walking too. A couple of years ago at Jazz Fest, I saw some of the Bonerama guys sit in with Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, a Cajun band. I was wondering what in the world Bonerama and Steve Riley were going to play that they both knew. I should have known - Fats Domino covers.
  3. Bonerama and Marcia Ball - I'm Walkin'. So, I was looking for that Bonerama/Steve Riley set when I came across something just about as good: Bonerama and Marcia Ball. I'll keep looking, but in the meantime, this is pretty good too.
